Hello, how are you all? My name is Harry and I blog sporadically at Itsonlyablog. I had the privilege of staying with Jessica and her husband Joel (and Cors of course!), when I visited the US in 2008.
I live in a town of about 40,000 called Yeovil, in Somerset, England. There isn’t a whole lot going on in this town, but if there is one thing we do have, it is history!
My dream day would start off by waking up at about 6:30am and heading down to the gym. I know this might sound like most people’s idea of an awful start to the day, but I happen to love getting up early, and getting out while the air is still crisp and there are less cars / people about.
After about an hour in the gym, I would go home and have some breakfast whilst catching up on emails / RSS / Facebook. Once that is done, I would call (and probably wake up) my beautiful girlfriend, Riina.
We would probably arrange to meet at about 10:30 – 11am, then then I would take her to Montacute House.
Now, if you have seen the 1995 movie of Sense and Sensibility, you have probably seen a bit of Montacute! There was at least one scene filmed in the village, you can see it on this clip, the part with Montacute in is between 3:06 and 3:29. It is quite an accurate representation of the village, if you take out the pigs and market stalls and add in some cars that is!
Montacute House itself is a beautiful Elizabethan country house, with some beautiful gardens as shown in the photo’s below.
Once we have finished looking in the house and walking around the gardens, I would take Riina over to Monks Yard café that serves beautiful home and locally made baked goods, honeys, jams and meats. If you’re ever in the area, they are well worth a visit for a quick bite to eat!
After lunch, I think we would possibly disappear down to the coast for the afternoon. West Bay is a popular seaside destination for people around here, as it is only about 45 minutes drive away. I actually cycled there with some friends last Sunday, 48 mile round trip! My legs were sore the next day, but it was totally worth it!
West Bay has a nice little fishing harbour, and you can sit eating some fresh fish and chips from one of the vendors whilst watching fishermen bring their haul in and unload loads of slimy fish! After that, I think a nice little stroll along the beach would be in order. Probably wearing jumpers of course, it is England after all!
When we get home, we would probably be too tired to do anything, so ordering Chinese takeout and watching a movie will more than likely be what we end up doing! I would then take Riina home, and again check my email / RSS and Facebook. Well, I am a geek after all!
There is so many more options that we could have done that are in the local area, Bath is a must see city if you are in England, Bristol is fairly close by with all of its rich history, and of course I’m only 1 1/2 hours drive away from Stonehenge
But unfortunately the one thing we lack that I discovered in the US, is smores!
