Sophi Flo, of Jesophi, has not one but two amazingly beautiful stores. Her Etsy shop is full of amazing little treasures and her Big Cartel store has the prettiest of natural jewelry!
I especially love her Big Cartel store maybe because my dad is a geologist. Once when I was little he brought home a bag full of little brown rocks. They didn’t look like much but after dinner he took my sister and me out to the driveway and gave us each a hammer. We banged away on our little rocks and before we knew it they had cracked open and were full of crystals! Sophi’s jewelry give me the same feeling of wonder.
Q. Could you tell us a little about yourself?
I enjoy a lot of simple things like going for ice cream, a bike ride, cooking new recipes or just lay down in the grass but also like many women I love to go shopping! I adore fashion although almost every thing is out of my league, it really inspires me, looking fashion in a point of view like a way to express yourself , as an art, as a concept.
Q. How did you get started making jewelry?
I’ve always been a creative and dreamer person, I would be always writing or making art projects, or taking photographs and when I moved to Montreal I started looking for a Graphic designer job because that’s what I studied , but in the meantime I was so bored!! I always wanted to study sculpture in metals, so then it hit me. I started to research about jewelry making, what was the process, where to buy supplies etc. I started to hang out more in galleries and art shows in Montreal to get more inspiration from this the creative area.
Q. Your shops are so beautiful! What is your creative process like?
Well I love to do research, I’m currently subscribed to many fashion and photography blogs as well as DIY and art pages and I do read them. I like to know what’s going on, what’s in, but at the end I do what my inspiration leads me and since I only work on Jesophi I have a lot of free time. I have many jewelry books and magazines where I find tips that they are meant to be for one specific technique but I give it a twist and use it for another one. Also I hang out with my suppliers and in antique stores a lot so when I find something that I can use for my collection the single findings (I call them treasures) inspires me.
After that I just take my time and make the pieces, take the photographs and upload them on the stores. Although it sounds like a quick process it takes time to do everything as the way I like it, sometimes I have pieces that I created two months ago and I totally change them because they never really convinced me.
Q. What’s a normal day in your life like?
As a real life is, I wake up and make coffee I can’t work without my morning cup of coffee I turn on the computer, if I am in the mood I read some news in the world but that’s sometimes because it can be really sad at that time of the morning then I get into a cranky mood, but well I read all my emails. I check if i have any sales that I need to work on them if so I eat a quick breakfast and start working, if not I try to schedule the days that I’m working on new pieces and the ones that I’m taking photographs, after that I just do some housework there are days that I go for a run or workout and then I start make dinner, after dinner I usually watch a movie while working on the shop or making posts for my two blogs , I also video chat a lot during the night with my old friends.
Q. What inspires you most of all?
Everything, really.
But mostly I would say:
French culture I live in the french part of Canada so they have a lot that in their traditions also I adore vintage treasures. Nature I mean I have always been very into it but well my boyfriend is a biologist so that’s part of my daily life. Fashion, Art and Architecture, I love colors I love photography the process of it. The meaning that you can give to some creation that is very personal and not that many people understand it sometimes, I guess is the weirdness that I’m most attract. I love music I’m listening to everything from jazz to electronic and new music, I’m a music nerd, sort of. I also like simple things, to be just in silence or thinking very deeply, doing that leads me to start planing future projects.
