waysideviolet - cozy, lovely things

interview: sarah mcneil

The first time I saw one of Sarah McNeils beautiful illustrations I almost couldn’t believe the sweetness of it. Each one seems so thoughtful and effortless at the same time. I could look at them for hours!

I especially love the custom pet portraits she creates and I’m pretty sure I need one someday soon! (I would also totally have breakfast at her future restaurant/gallery!)

Sarah, thank you so much for making time for this interview!

Q. Hello Sarah! Could you tell us a little about yourself?
Hmmm… yes, I am 24, I live in New Zealand (where I have been living for a year), I work from home as an artist and illustrator. I really really like Mexican food and breakfast food and one day hope to open a breakfast restaurant/gallery.

Q. Your illustrations are lovely! How did your illustration career begin?
I finished university with a degree in Fine Art, and after that I needed a job. I am quite small and look very young for my age and no one wanted to hire me for any real life jobs, so I made my own job as an illustrator.

Q. What’s your favorite item to make?
Nice drawings mostly. I like to do knitting, but more for fun than for work.

Q. What’s a normal day like for you?
Wake up, coffee, check emails. Usually I leave a drawing or piece of paper on my desk the night before so I have something ready that I can get started on. I’ll work on that until it’s finished or I can’t work on it anymore, then either do some posting of things, or think of any other projects that need doing and start on them. Lunch is during that time somewhere, and at the end I make dinner and maybe keep working or if I’m tired then look at blogs/watch a movie.

Q. What inspires you most of all?
Animals, nature, science, reality.
