Ayo is one busy lady. She’s a full time college student and has the most delightful jewelry shop, Ayofemi Jewelry! I especially love her modern take on friendship bracelets!
Q. Hello Ayo! Could you tell us a little about yourself?
Hi! I’m 22 years old, a senior at Arizona State University, and I run a small jewelry shop.
Q. Your shop is so lovely! What drew you to jewelry making?
I’ve always loved doing crafty things and I started making jewelry for myself to wear simply because its fun for me to do.
Q. What’s your favorite piece to make?
My favorite pieces to make are the long beaded necklaces. I love doing wirework and using gemstone beads.
Q. What’s a normal day like for you?
Since I’m a full time student still (19 credit hours) it depends on what day of the week it is and when my classes are. For instance on Tuesdays and Thursdays I generally get up early and answer emails and convos on Etsy, then I have class from 9 until 2. When I get home I’ll make a list of what jewelry needs to be made. Then I make all of the pieces, package the orders and take them to the post office the next morning and start the process over again before my afternoon classes start. And there’s also some homework being done in between all that as well!
Q. What inspires you most of all?
Hmm, well I’d have to say nature. I’m sure thats that most common answer to this question but its true! I especially love minerals/crystals and landscapes. I have a little rock collection in my workspace. I also am inspired by color a lot. I really like to create new color combinations and see how I can translate those into my work.
