thrifty friday: gardening from seed

Today I’m starting a new feature that will probably be making an appearance twice a month or so. Say, “hello!” to Thrifty Friday! Thrifty Friday posts are going to cover all kinds of subjects from a penny saving point of view. Today’s topic: gardening from seeds. Starting your garden from seed is quite a bit cheaper than buying plants and it has the added bonus of letting you get your hands in the dirt even if it’s still freezing outside!

Most of what I know about gardening I’ve learned from my dad and grandma. Their love for gardening has rubbed off on me. (Maybe green thumbs run in the family?) I’ve had decent luck with flowers and veggies, but I’ve usually opted for maturing plants. This year I’m planning ahead and to get things started I headed to the hardware store for seeds, planting trays and soil.

I’m focusing on the salad and herb gardens right now. The salad seeds are: lettuces, arugula (rocket) and a mix of spicy greens. I had a lot of luck with arugula last summer and it’s so delicious!

Herb seeds: basil, chamomile, cilantro and lavender. I’ve never grown chamomile but the packets were so charming I couldn’t resist!

Biodegradable planting trays are the perfect incubators and you can easily separate them and plant them right in the ground once you’re safe from frost.

I followed the directions on the planting soil and mixed it with water. Then popped in the seeds and now I wait for the exciting little sprouts to start showing up!

A whole lot of garden for less than $12!

For less than $12! Score. I’d love to get my plant on haha. At work we have a good collection of grown vegetables that we grow with the children : )
