I feel like I’ve been saying (and typing) this so very much lately, but Renegade was such an inspiring and encouraging experience! And I’m so excited to share an interview with one of my favorite artists from the weekend, Robbie from RobbieMoto. Her booth was the sweetest and her work is just gorgeous!
Q. Could you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Robbie Matsumoto and I live in Saint Paul Minnesota along with my husband Hiromi and my Great Dane, Veda. My husband and I love to keep busy in creative endeavors. We play in a band together named Akai along with 7 other close friends, feel free to check us out at theakai.com!
Q. How did RobbieMoto get started?
I have always enjoyed sewing and making things. A couple years back I stumbled across this fabric warehouse in the twin cities that sells leather remnants, I was in need of a wallet so I decided to make myself one. That then led to making them for my family and friends. All the while I was working job after job that I was unhappy at. When I was at the end of my last temp job and didn’t know what was next for me, my sweet husband encouraged me to focus on my little side business. So that’s what I did starting January of 2010 and that’s when RobbieMoto officially began.
Q. Your shop is so pretty! What is your creative process like?
Thank you! I try to find patterns and images in nature to work with, birds, trees, flowers, etc. I then sketch them out, work up a pattern and then go to it. And I love color. I’ve really been into using yellows, teals, peacock blues and bright reds. So I try to think of how to tie that color palette into my designs.
Q. Do you have a favorite piece to make?
I think my favorite piece to make are my woodgrain pieces. I also really like the peacock feather embroidery I’ve been doing.
Q. What’s a normal day in your life like?
I wake up, put on some motivating music (my favorite to work to being Arcade Fire or Fanfarlo) make my coffee, come up with a list of things I need to make for the day and then go to it! Sometimes it’s a custom order, those are always fun cause they force me to try something new. And then sometimes it’s an order I have to fill for a boutique I sell at and sometimes its just keeping my little etsy shop filled.
Q. What inspires you most of all?
In my designs? I would say nature.
In my life? I would say my husband.
