ace hotel x impossible project

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the trip we took to New York last month quite a bit. Maybe it’s because even though we’ve been working hard all day for the last week unloading the truck, then unpacking boxes, and dangling from ladders to paint the super tall walls of our new place, it still feels a little bit like we’re on vacation. It might also be that we’ve been channeling our room at The Ace for inspiration for our new home.

Either way, I realized that I hadn’t shared any of the shots we took in NYC with our Ace Hotel x Impossible Project film. This are one of my favorites, before and after.

interview with a photographer

A few weeks ago, I was going through the flickr favorites of my friends, like I do from time to time, in hopes of finding some new-to-me and inspiring photographers. I found a bunch! A few were so compelling that I jotted off emails to them right away to see if they would be interested in a little interview series I wanted to put together.

Here is the second interview in the series featuring Jennifer. I hope you enjoy the photos and words as much as I have!

Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m a lifestyle photographer living in San Luis Obispo, a small and charming town on the Central Coast of California. When not taking photos, you can find me blogging, exploring cities, café hopping, eating with friends, outdoors hiking, or hanging with my husband and our 1-year old border collie Dexter.

What kinds of camera(s) do you use?

interview with a photographer

A few weeks ago, I was going through the flickr favorites of my friends, like I do from time to time, in hopes of finding some new-to-me and inspiring photographers. I found a bunch! A few were so compelling that I jotted off emails to them right away to see if they would be interested in a little interview series I wanted to put together. Here is the first of two interviews this week.

I hope you enjoy the photos and words as much as I have!

Our first photographer is Maria. All of her photos are lovely, but I’m especially taken with her shots of interiors.

Well us a little about yourself:
I am Maria, 29 years old. I am from Germany but moved to Sydney in August 2010. Ever since I am walking along the streets here trying to capture little moments of life.

What kinds of camera(s) do you use?
I use a Canon 450d (digital). But lately I only use my two Pentax cameras, a Pentax SP 500 and K1000 which I both scored on a flea market.

the m! a photography e-course

Kara Haupt has another exciting e-course that begins today that can help improve your photography skills. Kara is a great teacher -I can vouch for that- and this class looks like one of her best yet! This class looks like the perfect thing for Spring Break boredom or for getting your photos up to scratch in time to capture summertime memories.

Here’s a little more info from Kara:

The M

I’ve heard from too many people how they’re scared to slide their camera’s setting from Auto or Shutter/Aperture Priority over to the big M. I was too! My settings didn’t move out of Auto until a year after I got a DSLR. But, one day I decided to learn Manual and I haven’t switched it back since!

an october project

Yesterday morning before work, I realized that I hadn’t taken a single photo for my 365 Project in October yet. And we’re already a week into my favorite month! So I looked at the dinning room table that is constantly covered in magazines, muslin and fabric swatches and spotted this ball of beautiful, burnt-orange wool that I brought home from a trip to Virgina last December.

October 6

I haven’t figured out what I want to do with it. It was more than halfway to being a hat when I realized that orange on my ginger hair wasn’t the prettiest thing ever.

a note on food photography

I used to think that taking photos of food was just the hardest thing ever! It was beyond my abilities and most of my shots turned out unappetizing or just a bit gross, if you know what I mean. But after lots of practice I think I’ve gotten a bit better and I hardly ever take a bite before grabbing the camera!

July 18

I think the three most important things for good food photos are: natural light, good framing and the right props. Next time you want to take a picture of that amazing pie or fantastic dinner, move the plate to a table near the window.

August 15

Play with different  angles. I think the best way to do this is by looking through the viewer, don’t depend on the display screen. Move around and see what your shot would look like from the side, from above, etc.

something beautiful

I have something extra lovely to share today! There tons of amazing historic photo archives on flickr, but the Brooklyn Museum‘s Paris Exposition of 1900 set is just breathtaking! These images were brought back by the Brooklyn Museum’s first curator of fines, William Henry Goodyear.

According to the museum, “In 1900, Goodyear traveled to the Paris Exposition with photographer Joseph Hawkes. They brought back numerous images from the exposition including street life, vistas, pavilions, statues, and other structures and decorative details.”

wednesday loves

It’s been a rainy with sunshine kind of day. It’s such dreamy weather and I think I have some pretty dreamy things for today’s loves. I hope you’ll like them!

First up, a recent purchase! I love this modern friendship bracelet from Ayofemi Jewelry. I ordered it for my sister and it came yesterday. Just look how darling it is! It’s quite delicate and I love how it looks draped on a rock I brought back from California.
