sounds & cinema

A few weeks ago, we joined some friends (and most of Austin) at Sound & Cinema. Sound & Cinema is such a neat event. Sponsored by the amazing Alamo Drafthouse, it’s a pairing of movie and music under the summertime Texas stars.

We saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. It’s such a lovely thing to share some laughs with friends as the city lights grow ever brighter, the sunsets, and then the familiar soundtrack announces the start of the film.

evening exercise

Cors loves playing outside, but in the summer in his thick fur coat it’s just too warm to play during the day. So we’ve started a summer tradition of evening playtime. He’s such a fun pup and so handsome, too!

daydream vacation

It wasn’t too long ago that I was stuck inside (in a windowless basement, no less) all during my workday. I worked at university and I learned a lot while I was there. One thing I will never forget is how much pleasure a single window and natural light can give a person. I used to spend my downtown looking at gardens and photos of Paris.

In the spirit of summertime escapism, here’s is a daydream vacation for you…

Imagine relaxing on a sun-drenched deck, smelling roses, and snacking on layered ice cream pops.

recipe: indonesian satay

A few weekends ago we had a really delicious Dutch/Indonesian feast at a friend house. It all started when Joel and our new friend Sam realized they both grew up with very similar foods. Between the two of them they made: nasi goreng (fried rice), krupuk (prawn crackers), Indonesian satay, and bumbu (peanut sauce).

Joel uses his mom’s delicious recipe for satay. It works well for lots of different kinds of meat, but we all agreed that the chicken was the tastiest.

The recipe makes enough marinade for about 2 pounds of meat.

around here lately

Summer is well and truly camping out in Austin and sunglasses, sundresses, icy cold cherry lemonades are the order of the day. This is a bit of what’s been happening lately.

Below: Joel’s new Warby Parker specs, blooms in our front yard, my new dress (wore it last night to Ballet Under the Stars), and Cors snuggling with my current read.

Speaking of Vintage Heart, they celebrated their 1 year birthday last weekend. Congratulations Mallory and family!

tequila peach tarts

There’s a gorgeous new market in town full of amazing local produce and all kinds of nice things. On a recent visit, I pounced on some peaches. They seemed like the perfect ingredients for a recipe from Not Without Salt that I’ve been wanting to try. I switched things up a little bit and made tarts instead of the pie.

They turned out very tasty, but I’m intrigued by the description of the crust. Buttery? Flaky? Yes, I need to make that!

the lovely outdoors

Lately, it’s been crazy hot out. Hot and humid and nasty and it makes me not think too highly of summer. Maybe that’s why I keep bookmarking airy photos and daydreaming of visiting a quiet, cool summer home. Preferably, one with lots of green plants and maybe a river to splash in!

summertime is here

Summertime is here! Oddly enough we had a power outage at work today. It felt weird because if we have a power outage it’s nearly always because of blizzards and that sort of thing. Without power we couldn’t do any work so we got to leave early! I celebrated summer and the extra free time with some strawberries, lemonade and book time in the sun.

espresso & yarn

Yesterday afternoon we met up with friends, Kirstin and Tyler, for coffee, conversation and (for me) knitting. We went to The Grind and I had a delightful hazelnut breve latte. Mmm, it was so creamy and good! We sat out in the California sunshine and chatted and stitched.
